Description of the genus

Rhizome erect or creeping; rhizome scales linear attenuate, brown. Stipe dark reddish-brown, glabrous. Fronds tufted or spaced. Lamina 2-4-pinnatifid with white, pink, yellow or orange powder on underside, glabrous on upper surface; veins free. Sori without an indusium, borne along the length of the veins.

 

Derivation of name:  pityon: chaff, gramma: line; reference to the powdery, linear-like arrangement of the sori.

Worldwide: 16 species, neotropical distribution.
